The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced the successful berthing at Onne Ports in Rivers State the biggest container vessel yet to call at any Nigerian port.
Measuring 300 metres overall length and 48 metres width, the Singapore-flagged 9,971-TEU Maerskline Stardelhorn was brought in from Fairway Bouy Bonny by three NPA tugboats.
It was received at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), Onne at 4.20pm on Saturday, August 15, 2020 by the Ports Manager, Alhasssan Abubakar, according to a statement by the NPA General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Jatto Adams.
Delighted at the development, the NPA said the landmark arrival of the biggest gearless Maerskline vessel at the Onne Ports was a result of its determination to improve the patronage of the Eastern Ports.
The agency added that it also proved that the Eastern Ports are equipped to receive all manner of vessels, and implies an expansion of the options of consignees in the eastern and northern parts of the country.
It further commended all stakeholders at the Onne Ports for their cooperation towards a successful and hitch-free berthing of the vessel, while restating its commitment to ensuring that all ports in the country work at their optimal capacity to reposition Nigeria as the sub-regional hub.
