Worldwide, the maritime and logistics sectors drive globalisation, with everything about trade and development centred on them. Consequently, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has continued to position the country for optimal benefits from international transport and logistics.
Giving these remarks, the NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, said that in line with these facts, the agency would readily partner the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) as a body crucial to the growth of the maritime sector.
“The maritime sector is all about movement of goods from one point to another and this cannot be done without logistics. This is a confirmation that everything about trade and development depends solely on logistics,” he said.
Peterside, who spoke shortly after his investiture as a Fellow of the institute, promised to work with others for the quick passage of the CILT establishment Act, hopeful that the bill would become law before the end of 2019.
He commended the CILT management for the development of the transportation sector, pledging that the new inductees would work to see it established on a sound footing in Nigeria, as well as make capacity building for members a priority.
Also, CILT National President, Mr. Jibril Ibrahim, pledged the institute’s commitment to the growth of the nation’s maritime sector, stating that logistics is critical to the actualisation of a robust maritime sector.
Ibrahim, who is also NIMASA’s Director, Maritime Labour Services, called for more inter-agency collaboration to solve the problem of traffic congestion at the port area.
On his part, chairman of the occasion and Director General, African Centre for Supply Chains, Dr. Obiora Madu, suggested a stronger partnership with the various agencies in the area of capacity building, stressing that government agencies need the institute’s intellectual capacity.
He further charged the inductees help CILT with their wealth of experience and expertise to enable it achieve a viable transportation sector.
Industry stakeholders who were inducted for their contribution to the growth of the maritime sector included Peterside, the Managing Director, Nigerian Ports Authority, Hadiza Bala Usman, and the Managing Director, Creseda International Limited, Mr. Jonas Nilsson.
