Lagos consumer cries foul over exorbitant electricity bills

After several fruitless efforts to resolve the issue, a Lagos resident, Mr. David Sagua, has cried out to the public over the exorbitant estimated billing being slammed on him the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP).

Sagua, who resides at House 15, 2nd Avenue, NNPC Estate, Satellite Town, insists that “with light bulbs and ceiling fans (no air conditioner, no television, no refrigerator) in an apartment he uses Mondays to Thursdays every week, it was impossible for him to consume over N5,000 worth of electricity in a month.

Therefore, he is seeking a permanent solution to the exorbitant bills, especially as the bill for February and March 2023 raised the outstanding in his account, 03/45/03/1629-01, from a little over N50,000 to N197,234.24 by March 17, 2023.

Lamenting the delay in being provided with a prepaid meter, which he had already paid for, he, however, demanded a review of his bill before the pre-paid meter is installed.

In his latest protest letter, he said he was reminding EKEDP “about my earlier complain of the crazy bills slammed on me in February and March, which brought the total estimated bill to my account number 03/45/03/1629-01 to N197,234.24 by 17/03/2023 from a little above N50,000.00.”

According to him, he had requested a disconnection after the order was served, “but to my surprise the bill on the account is said to be over N210,000 at a time I am contesting the earlier bill.

“I have been requesting that you send someone to my house to inspect it. I know I shouldn’t be paying up to N5,000 a month and I once again demand a review of the bill before the installation of the pre-paid meter, which I have paid for since July 2023.”

However, Sagua warned that if all these issues were not sorted out before the end of December 10, 2023, he would “start a campaign against EKEDP in media houses as well as social media. I am posting this on all the social media platforms, starting now.

“Last year, the bill was N78,829 and there was a disconnection order on it. I didn’t reconnect but applied for pre-paid (meter) sometime in July/August 2022.

“EKEDP didn’t respond, so I had to go to your office in Festac, where I was told I must reconnect first. I paid N25,000 and reconnection fee to bring the balance to N53,000+ in October, 2022 but the bill was reading September.

“In November, no bill was brought and I had to go to your office in Satellite Town, where I was told to pay any amount and I paid N10,000 in December 2022.”
