The Nigerian Navy has handed over to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) a tanker vessel, MT Sea Eunice, which was arrested on August 11, 2022 for flouting the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) regulation.
The Base Operations Officer of the Nigerian Navy Ship, Delta (NNS DELTA), Commander Samuel Musa, said the vessel, presently located along the Escravos River, close to Aroton community, was constantly switching off her Automatic Identification System (AIS), in violation of the NIMASA-enforced IMO regulation.
Speaking on the development, the NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, commended the Nigerian Navy for always being proactive in its operations, while restating NIMASA’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration with the navy.
“Let me use this opportunity to state that NIMASA and the Nigerian Navy are partners in progress, because without synergy we cannot realise our mandates,” he stated.
“We will continue to work closely with the Nigerian Navy to strengthen the existing ties to ensure we keep our maritime environment safe and secure.”
Receiving the vessel on behalf of NIMASA, the agency’s District Surveyor, Central Zone, Joshua Oyadiran, further assured that NIMASA would investigate the reported breach of regulation, in line with its mandate.
