As Fagbola becomes Ikeja Rotary’s 52nd president

In a human society with more persons living below their basic needs while a few have much more than they require, the Chairman of First Bank Nigeria Plc, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika, has cautioned wealthy parents not to “destroy or bury” their children’s talent with over-provision and transferred wealth.
Awosika, who is also the founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Chair Centre Group, stressed that those blessed with financial and material wealth beyond their needs should disburse them in a way to leave behind a lasting legacy for humanity and create the balance that God intended.
Speaking at the installation of Mr. Olumuyiwa Fagbola as the 52nd President of the Rotary Club of Ikeja and induction of its Board of Directors for the 2019/2020 year, she insisted that “through what you do everyday, some will have too much, some just enough; some that you don’t know and might not be part of rotary will not have enough.
“In His wisdom, God made more than enough for humanity, and gave some much more than they would need and left some with less than they would need, but knew that too much plus too little is equal to enough for everybody on the face of the earth.”
Warning that too much inheritance bequeathed to the children will “steal their vision and ability to deliver,” she regretted that “sometimes we over-provide for our children that they will never express their own talent. We must be careful of that because we destroy lives when parents provide or leave too much.
“Every child is born with talent and gift, but when you give them too much, you burry it, because you give them no reason to aspire to achieve, and it is to your detriment. That is why people always think that one generation that succeeds always leaves the next generation that doesn’t, and that it is the children of people who have needs that are driven to achieve next.”
Awosika noted that the idle N10 billion in a bank account is irrelevant to a dead owner, adding that a lot of people are now changing their mode, “people sell their assets before time, give whatever they want and invest where they want.
“May we live lives in a way that when we are done, it will touch generations yet unborn and live a legacy of doing what is right, of living decently, of bringing smiles to the faces of people, of changing homes and lives, of sowing seeds that can never die.”
On his part, Fagbola, who commended members and donors for their support for the club’s projects in education, health and economic empowerment, among others, solicited continuous support from all and sundry as the club continues its humanity-based programmes for the current year.
He listed their planned projects for the year to include renovation and equipment of block of three classrooms, as well as the provision of e-learning facility at Ikeja Junior Secondary School, and quarterly interest-free N25,000 loan to 40 market women and men at Isolo community, among others.
